Study Finds Beards Harbor More Bacteria Than Dogs’ Fur, Scientists Warn
Hollywood’s Bearded Heartthrobs Face Hygiene Warning: Study Claims Beards Harbor More Germs Than Dogs
From Jason Momoa to Zayn Malik, bushy beards have become a signature look for many celebrities. But a new study suggests facial hair might carry more germs than dog fur—and even rival toilet bacteria in extreme cases.
Dr. Primrose Freestone, a microbiology expert at the University of Leicester, warns that beards create an ideal environment for bacteria. In an article for The Conversation, she explained that the warmth, moisture, and trapped food debris in facial hair fuel microbial growth. Constant touching of the beard with unwashed hands adds contaminants, raising infection risks.

Beards vs. Dog Fur: A Shocking Comparison
A 2018 study in European Radiology compared bacteria levels in men’s beards and dog fur. Researchers analyzed MRI scanners shared by humans and pets and found that 18 out of 18 bearded men had higher microbial counts than 23 of 30 dogs. Some beards even hosted harmful pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause skin infections like impetigo.
Beards were found to contain more microbes than dog fur, including harmful bacteria.
Contradictory Findings and Risks
Not all studies paint beards as biohazards. Research on healthcare workers showed no significant bacterial difference between bearded and clean-shaven staff. However, Dr. Freestone cautioned that neglected beards can still lead to skin irritation, fungal growth, or even parasites like pubic lice in rare cases.

Keeping Beards Clean: Expert Tips
While beards can host germs, daily care reduces risks. Dr. Freestone suggests:
- Wash daily: Use mild cleansers to remove oils and dead skin.
- Moisturize: Prevent dryness to avoid irritation.
- Comb regularly: Clear debris with a beard comb.
- Trim often: Manage loose hairs and maintain shape.
“With proper hygiene, beards pose little risk and may even be healthier than once thought,” she concluded. So, while celebrities rock their rugged looks, a little upkeep ensures their signature style stays both trendy and clean.
