Superman Director Dubbed ‘Superwoke’ Amid Backlash Over ‘Immigrant’ Label for Man of Steel

James Gunn Sparks Debate by Comparing Superman to Immigrants Ahead of Film Release

Director James Gunn, 58, has stirred controversy ahead of Superman’s July 11 release by likening the iconic hero to an immigrant. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Gunn emphasized Superman’s origins as a story of hope and human kindness. “Superman is the story of America—an immigrant who comes here seeking a better life,” he said. “It’s a reminder that basic human kindness is a value we’ve lost.”

The film, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, has already drawn mixed reviews. Gunn addressed potential political divides in its reception, stating, “Some may take offense because it’s about kindness. But screw them.” Critics, however, accused Gunn of injecting “woke” ideology. Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld argued Gunn uses “a woke shield,” while Kellyanne Conway claimed audiences seek escapism, not lectures. Conservative commentator Chris Stigall criticized Gunn for omitting “illegal” from the immigration debate, despite Superman’s motto of “truth, justice, and the American way.”

At Monday’s LA premiere, Gunn dismissed the backlash: “This movie is about kindness—something everyone can relate to.” Cast members rallied behind him. Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern) quipped, “Aw, somebody needs a hug. It’s just a movie, guys.” Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord and the director’s brother) added, “Superman is an immigrant. If you reject that, you’re against the American way.”

The film reimagines Superman’s journey from Krypton to Earth, blending action with themes of empathy. While debates over its messaging continue, Gunn’s focus remains on storytelling: “I’m not here to judge—just to share a story about what it means to be kind.”

Superman arrives in theaters Friday, July 11.
