Barra Airport: The World’s Only Beach Runway
Nestled on Scotland’s remote Isle of Barra, this unique airport offers a flight experience like no other.

A Runway That Disappears
Barra Airport, located 40 miles off Scotland’s west coast in the Outer Hebrides, is the only airport in the world where planes land and take off from a beach. The runway—a stretch of hard-packed sand on Traigh Mhòr Bay—is submerged twice daily by tidal waters, making flight schedules dependent on the sea. Since 1974, the airport has connected the island to Glasgow with twice-daily flights, serving 14,000 passengers annually and accommodating 60 private flights.
Scenic and Unconventional
Dubbed “Barrabados” for its Caribbean-like white sands and turquoise waters, the airport was named the world’s most scenic in 2012 by PrivateFly. When flights aren’t operating, the beach becomes a public space for surfing, dog walks, and family outings. Pilots face unique challenges here: no runway lights or automated guidance systems. “Landing relies entirely on skill and judgment,” explains Loganair Captain Laura Roper.

Behind the Scenes
Aviation enthusiast Nicky Kelvin of The Points Guy fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting Barra. “It’s a dramatic setting—you’re landing on a beach that disappears with the tide,” he said. Airport staff meticulously inspect the runway for debris washed ashore and ensure no curious cockle pickers wander onto the sand before flights.
A Runway Proposal
In 2023, the airport set the stage for romance. Stephen McCann enlisted staff to etch “Will you marry me?” into the sand. His fiancée, Bridget Byrne, spotted the message mid-landing and said “yes” before the plane even stopped.

More Than Just an Airport
Barra’s charm lies in its simplicity. The tiny terminal offers free Wi-Fi and parking, but the real magic is the raw, tidal landscape. As Kelvin noted, it’s a “breath of fresh air” compared to bustling hubs—a bucket-list gem where aviation meets nature’s rhythm.
