Pedro Pascal, 50, has opened up about criticism surrounding his casting as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps. Despite his celebrated career, some fans argued the actor is “too old” for the role. Pascal addressed the backlash during a London fan event, admitting the comments affected him more than expected.
“I usually ignore negativity, but this time, it got to me,” Pascal told AP News. “The love fans have for these characters is why these stories exist. I felt a responsibility to honor that.” He acknowledged the pressure to “fulfill expectations” but emphasized his commitment: “I gave the role my heart, body, and soul.”

The actor, known for The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, called turning 50 “the best time of my life,” adding, “I’m having an incredible experience right now.”
Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer, released in February, initially drew mixed reactions. Fans praised its retro aesthetic and fresh cast, which includes Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), Julia Garner (Silver Surfer), and John Malkovich. Social media buzzed with comments like, “This looks sleek—it nails the period vibe like First Avenger,” and “Finally, a Marvel movie I’m excited about!”

Pascal’s casting follows controversy over his support for the trans community, which drew criticism from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. However, the actor has remained focused on his work, recently attending London’s Evita press night amid fan frenzy.
The film, set for release on July 25, marks Marvel’s reboot of the superhero team. Early footage highlights a 1960s-inspired aesthetic, with Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic leading the group alongside Kirby’s Invisible Woman and Quinn’s Human Torch.
Fans praised the trailer’s nostalgic feel.
Despite online debates, Pascal remains optimistic: “I’m grateful for this moment. It’s a reminder to focus on the love behind these stories.”
