Sublime frontman Jakob Nowell, 30, nearly canceled his band’s Vans Warped Tour set in Long Beach, California, on Saturday after suffering the loss of his beloved hairless cat, Creature. During the performance, an emotional Nowell shared with the crowd, “Creature was my best f***ing friend,” explaining he’d made the difficult decision to euthanize the pet earlier that day.

Despite his grief, Jakob chose to perform, telling fans, “I almost didn’t want to play today, but I thought, ‘I don’t know what any of you are going through.’” He added, “I’m glad to be here playing my father’s music with my best friends and family.”

A Tribute to Creature

Creature, a hairless sphynx cat, was a constant presence in Jakob’s life, often featured on his Instagram alongside another cat, Fluffy. Photos showed Creature dressed in costumes or curled on his lap. In a 2023 interview, Jakob called the cat his “mascot” for his side project, Jakob’s Castle, reflecting on how Creature filled the role once held by his late father Bradley’s dalmatian, Lou Dog, Sublime’s original mascot.

Carrying On Sublime’s Legacy

Jakob now fronts Sublime, the iconic ska-punk band originally led by his father Bradley, who died of a heroin overdose in 1996 when Jakob was just a year old. After Sublime disbanded, surviving members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh reunited in 2009 as Sublime With Rome (featuring singer Rome Ramirez). In 2023, Jakob officially joined Wilson and Gaugh to reclaim the Sublime name, marking a full-circle moment.

Overcoming Personal Struggles
Jakob’s path hasn’t been easy. He openly discussed his chaotic upbringing in a recent L.A. Magazine interview: “I grew up with a crazy, tumultuous home life… no silver spoon.” After years of estrangement from his mother, Troy Dendekker (who married Bradley days before his death), Jakob reconciled with her and his stepfather, Keith. He also credits sobriety with transforming his life, stating, “I want to use [Sublime’s music] as a tool to help people.”

Reflecting on Bradley Nowell’s Legacy
Though Jakob never met his father, he’s pieced together Bradley’s legacy through stories from fans and family. “He was widely loved… a human being with good days and bad days,” Jakob told Grammy.com. While fans sometimes compare him to Bradley, Jakob emphasizes, “I’m not him… but I’ll play his music genuinely.”

New Music and Moving Forward
Sublime released a new single, Ensenada, ahead of their Warped Tour set, signaling a fresh chapter. Jakob’s heartfelt tribute to Creature and resilience onstage underscored his dedication to both his father’s legacy and his own authentic path.

“His music helped a lot of people,” Jakob said of Bradley. Now, with vulnerability and passion, he’s ensuring that spirit lives on—one song, and one memory, at a time.
