A strange linear streak appeared on Washington D.C.’s weather radar Thursday afternoon, spurring speculation about aliens or secret weather experiments. The anomaly, shared online by Kari Lake, a U.S. Agency for Global Media advisor, coincided with a severe thunderstorm that brought 60+ mph winds, power outages, and chaos to the region.

Radar Mystery Solved
Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci quickly debunked the hype. The streak, he explained, wasn’t rain, UFOs, or geoengineering—it was likely caused by radar interference from a structure near Dulles Airport, such as a water tower or cellphone antenna. These objects can reflect radar beams, creating false signals. “This is common. Radars can pick up birds, planes, or even meteors too,” Cappucci noted.

While some skeptics joked about a “CIA cover-up,” Lake accepted the explanation. The storm, however, left real damage: downed trees crushed cars and homes, cutting power to over 15,000 Dominion Energy customers in Northern Virginia and thousands more in D.C. and Maryland.

Storm Aftermath and Close Call in NYC
The same weather system battered New York City, where 15-year-old Yassin Khalifa survived a lightning strike in Central Park. Leaning against a tree during the storm, he was knocked unconscious and suffered burns but avoided serious injury. “I’m lucky—no nerve damage,” Khalifa said. Bystanders described the harrowing scene as friends desperately sought help.

Though lightning kills about 30 Americans yearly, 90% of strike victims survive. Crews in D.C. worked tirelessly to restore power, with Pepco noting progress by Friday. The incident served as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictability—and the mundane truths behind even the strangest radar glitches.
