Urgent Android Alert: Popular Smartphone Explodes After Battery Performance Update
Google Pixel 6a Users Report Explosions Despite Safety Update
The Google Pixel 6a, a globally popular Android smartphone, is under scrutiny after multiple reports of devices overheating or even exploding. At least five incidents have been documented, including a recent case where a Reddit user’s phone caught fire after installing a mandatory software update intended to address battery issues.

In early July, Google rolled out an update to Pixel 6a devices to mitigate overheating risks, limiting battery capacity after 400 charge cycles. However, some users claim the update worsened the problem. One Reddit user described waking to their phone igniting on their nightstand, causing a small fire that damaged bedding and an AC unit. “My throat hurt all day from the fumes,” they wrote, sharing images of the melted screen and charred internals.

Google had offered free battery replacements in select countries, including the U.S., UK, and Japan. However, the affected Redditor, residing outside these regions, relied on the software fix instead. Days after installing it, their device overheated while charging overnight, leading to the incident.
Other users echoed concerns online. “My phone hits 140°F while charging post-update,” one commented. Another criticized Google’s response: “They should recall all faulty units.”

While Google has not yet addressed the latest incident, the reports highlight ongoing safety concerns. Owners are urged to monitor their devices for overheating and contact support if issues arise. For now, the Pixel 6a’s reliability remains in question, leaving users weighing upgrades or alternatives.
