Critical AirPlay Vulnerabilities Expose Apple Devices to Hackers
Cybersecurity experts at Oligo Security uncovered 23 flaws in Apple’s AirPlay feature, which lets users stream content between devices. Dubbed “AirBorne,” two critical vulnerabilities allow hackers on the same Wi-Fi network to infiltrate iPhones, deploy malware, steal data, or crash devices. Apple released patches on March 31, but millions of third-party AirPlay-compatible devices remain at risk.
Nearly two dozen AirPlay vulnerabilities leave iPhones exposed to attacks via shared Wi-Fi networks, researchers warn.
How the Attack Works
The flaws enable hackers to weaponize iPhones, spreading malware to any device on the same network. Attackers could eavesdrop on conversations, extract sensitive data, or take full control of devices. Apple confirmed exploits require proximity to the target’s Wi-Fi, but third-party gadgets like smart TVs or speakers may lack timely updates, leaving them vulnerable. Oligo estimates tens of millions of non-Apple devices are affected.
Apple’s Response and lingering Risks
Apple patched iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro devices, but many third-party manufacturers lag in issuing fixes. “Devices may never be patched, all due to flaws in one software component,” warned Oligo’s Ben Seri. Even updated Apple products aren’t fully safe if connected to compromised third-party devices.
Hackers can exploit AirPlay to spread malware across networks, compromising connected devices.
Protecting Your Devices
- Update Immediately: Ensure all Apple devices run the latest iOS/macOS updates.
- Disable AirPlay: Turn it off when unused to block hackers’ access.
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Automatically AirPlay > Never.
- Check Third-Party Devices: Confirm manufacturers have released recent security patches.
Disabling AirPlay reduces attack risks by stopping background signals that hackers exploit.
Why It Matters
With over 2.35 billion active Apple devices globally, and millions of unpatched third-party gadgets, the AirBorne flaws pose a widespread threat. While Apple addressed its ecosystem, users must stay vigilant—regular updates and cautious Wi-Fi usage are critical to thwarting attacks.
