Ford has issued a recall for 273,789 SUVs—223,154 Expeditions and 50,635 Navigators (model years 2022–2024)—due to a brake defect that could lead to loss of braking power while driving, increasing crash risks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports the issue stems from front brake lines potentially rubbing against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, causing leaks or brake failure.
What’s the Risk?
- Increased pedal travel: Drivers may need to press the brake pedal harder to slow down.
- Brake fluid leaks: A drop in fluid levels could trigger the brake warning light.
Ford states no accidents or injuries are linked to the defect, and only 1% of recalled vehicles are likely affected. However, 45 reports of brake leaks were logged between April and November 2023.

The Fix
Dealers will inspect brake lines for damage, replace faulty parts, and ensure proper alignment—free of charge. Owners will receive notification letters starting May 26, 2024.
How the Defect Occurred
A design flaw at Ford’s Kentucky plant allowed the radiator hose to bend the front brake line during engine installation. This misalignment caused friction with the air cleaner outlet, risking gradual damage. The plant updated its assembly process in March 2024 to prevent future issues.
Previous Recall Linked to Fire Risks
This follows a 2023 recall of 33,576 vehicles (2020–2022 Escapes and 2021–2023 Bronco Sports) for cracked fuel injectors that could leak gasoline, posing fire hazards. Affected owners received free repairs, including software updates.
