Tragedy Strikes Yankees Star Brett Gardner’s Family: 14-Year-Old Son Dies at Costa Rican Resort
The sudden death of Miller Gardner, 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, has left his family and authorities searching for answers. Miller was found unresponsive in his room at the luxury Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, on March 21 while vacationing with his family.
Initial reports suggested asphyxia from contaminated food, but Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) later ruled out airway obstruction. An autopsy and toxicology report are pending, which could take weeks. The family, including Brett and his wife Jessica, revealed others fell ill during the trip, leaving them with “so many questions.”

Food Poisoning Suspicions
The OIJ is investigating whether food poisoning contributed to Miller’s death. The resort, which claims to use “the freshest ingredients,” stated it is cooperating fully. Foodborne illnesses, such as those caused by Listeria, kill approximately 3,000 Americans annually, per the CDC. Symptoms like vomiting, fever, or paralysis can escalate in severe cases.
The Arenas Del Mar Resort, where Miller was staying, emphasized its commitment to guest safety amid the investigation.
Family’s Heartbreaking Statement
Brett and Jessica Gardner shared their grief: “We cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He passed peacefully in his sleep.” The U.S. State Department confirmed it is assisting the family and monitoring the investigation.
Yankees Community Mourns
